An Idea Borrowed

Years ago on a radio program someone shared that they read a chapter in Proverbs every day. Since there are 31 chapters and the longest month has 31 days it allows you to read through Proverbs on a regular basis. I use it as the launch pad for my personal worship time and branch out from there. On this blog I will try to share some of the insights I have in the Word. I will try to organize them in the archive by reference.

Friends and Family

(Proverbs 27:10 KJV)  Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off.

We need to come to grips with the truth that the bonds of the faith are to take precedent over the bonds of family.  This is very hard for parents who have children heading down the wrong path.  I recently read an article that informed us that polls showed Christians were becoming more accepting of gay marriage.  The reason was that they had children or family members who had embraced homosexuality and that changed their understanding of the issue.

This is an example of how the church is having Ichabod written over many sanctuaries.  When the sensitivity to family proclivities overrules the clear teaching of scripture we are drifting away from the faith, or maybe even running away.  We see too much of this in the church today.  Our theology is based on our feelings instead of God’s word.

So?  Value your family but don’t let it trump your Lord.
