An Idea Borrowed

Years ago on a radio program someone shared that they read a chapter in Proverbs every day. Since there are 31 chapters and the longest month has 31 days it allows you to read through Proverbs on a regular basis. I use it as the launch pad for my personal worship time and branch out from there. On this blog I will try to share some of the insights I have in the Word. I will try to organize them in the archive by reference.

On the Road Again

For the next few days I will be in a situation that does not guarantee safe access to the internet.  I have posts up and ready to appear.  That should be no problem but I might not be able to respond to comments for a few day.  Maybe, maybe not.

Grace and Peace.

Spam Filters?

I am resetting my filters in an attempt to keep all the anonymous spam out.  Most of it does not get published but I am tired of deleting it.  If this causes problems would someone let me know.  I can go back to the way it was before if this makes it hard to read or comment.

Grace and peace.

Blogger Blues

It seems like every time I schedule posts and don't get a chance to check, they get hung up.  This morning I had two posts that were marked "scheduled" and looked okay that were past posting time.  O, well.  I will post Tuesday's now (done) and see if I can get today's to come up a little later.

Technology is wonderful when it works.

Grace and peace.

He Is Risen!

He is risen indeed.

Let me pause to wish all of you a glorious Resurrection Sunday.  This is the central day for Christians to celebrate.  My parents have been gone for years.  I lost a brother a little over a year ago.  My mother in law is approaching death.  This is a special day for all who have lost someone or who are facing death themselves.  Remember,
(1 Corinthians 15:55 KJV)  O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
Since death is conquered, the only thing we have to worry about it taxes.

So?  Rejoice.

Grace and peace.

Technical Difficulties

I don't know if it effected the entire Blogger community but I have not been able to post anything for a couple of days.  The notice even said that they had withdrawn what was posted yesterday.  I am going to post Thursdays offering immediately, followed by the one that would have been up this morning.  Hopefully I will be back on schedule tomorrow.

Farewell Bonhoeffer

I have just removed Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Letters and Papers from Prison from my reading list.  It is a great book.  For more comments you can visit my more eclectic blog, Medley of Worship.  Or you are welcome to limit your reading this Perpetual Proverbs.

Thanks for visiting.

Start the NRSV

For the month of March I am going to be reading the New Revised Standard Version for my daily inspirational reading.  I will still use the KJV and NASB as the basis for my study time.

Posting Problems

I was very careful to check that the previous post was marked as scheduled for this morning at 5:00 A.M.  It was marked as scheduled.  All looked good.  I was out late tonight and when I got back it was not posted and was listed as "draft".  Something fishy.   Until I figure it out I am going to begin posting in the afternoon or evening for the next day.  If you have any ideas on what is happening here I would appreciate comments.

Appology, Again

I am not sure what is going on with this blogger.  I hit publish, check it on the edit post page and go on.  The next day I find it as a draft.  O well.  The previous post was supposed to be posted this morning at 5:00 A.M.

Unisex Translation

(Proverbs 13:5 KJV) A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.

Have you noticed in your King James translation that some words are set in italics? That is not a matter of emphasis. It is a translation technique used to show when words have been inserted to give understanding but they are not in the Greek or Hebrew. I don't think I have have been making that adjustment when I copied and pasted. I just now noticed it was not coming across. I will try to make that correction from now on. The NASB uses a similar technique. Thus "righteous man" becomes "the righteous". This might be a place where the feminists have a legitimate point to complain.

Repetition

As I look over posts I am reminded of how often we seem to have repetition of topics. I am sure that part of that, at least in posting, is a reflection of topics that I notice. We all have drums that we beat and harmonies that we like. I try not to harp on my pet themes, but am blind to my own foibles.

Another reason is that certain topics come up again and again. The Bible was put together to reflect what God wanted to say, not to achieve some literary idea of balance. If we see repeated reference to liars, it is because they offend God and He wants to remind us. If Proverbs talks a lot about wisdom, it is because we need to know about wisdom.

When you get to the letters of Paul, remember that the letters are written in response to issues and problems in the early church. Next time you start looking for a perfect church, remember that even Paul could not start one. If the early church had been perfect we would not have received much of the New Testament.

I trust the since the Holy Spirit was the real author of the Bible, it will say what I need to hear when I need to hear it. That is why a passage can come alive at a certain time in our lives. Have you had the experience of looking at a verse you underlined or a comment you wrote in the margin and wondered "Why?" At the time it was burning in you, now you are on another page. That is one of the glories of the word. It is alive and able to meet us where we are.

Read the word. Read the word. Read the word.
