An Idea Borrowed

Years ago on a radio program someone shared that they read a chapter in Proverbs every day. Since there are 31 chapters and the longest month has 31 days it allows you to read through Proverbs on a regular basis. I use it as the launch pad for my personal worship time and branch out from there. On this blog I will try to share some of the insights I have in the Word. I will try to organize them in the archive by reference.

Discover Not

(Psa 84:11 KJV)  For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

(Proverbs 24 also read)

Be careful how you interpret a verse like this.  It is full of promise.  It is truly a joy to read.  It is also a filter.  So often we get so excited about the picture of promise that we ignore the filter.

We like the idea that God does not “withhold” (4513) the “good” (2896b) from us.  We like the idea of the kiosk of vending machines you find in Japan.  I remember on spot in the middle of nowhere.  The road had a place to pull off and beside the road, lit up and inviting was an automated market of hot and cold drinks and food.  I think you could even use your credit card.  It was all for the taking.  Some people think of God that way.

We are not so enthused about that little issue of walking “uprightly” (8549).  We get really good at ignoring that.  And then we wonder why the cosmic candy bar does not appear.

So?  It isn’t a matter of earning God’s blessings as much as applying Him to our lives.  I don’t know now many times I have tried to use my Discover at Cosco.  Eventually I realize that they want to give me all I selected but they want a different card.
