An Idea Borrowed

Years ago on a radio program someone shared that they read a chapter in Proverbs every day. Since there are 31 chapters and the longest month has 31 days it allows you to read through Proverbs on a regular basis. I use it as the launch pad for my personal worship time and branch out from there. On this blog I will try to share some of the insights I have in the Word. I will try to organize them in the archive by reference.

Atonement Is Not a New Testament Idea

(Pro 16:6 KJV)  By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.

One of the mistaken ideas that I come across is the idea that there was no forgiveness of sin offered in the Old Testament.  To those people I would ask, “What part of atonement don’t you understand?”  This is just one reference.  The Old Testament is saturated with this idea.  Atonement was available.

There are other things we need to consider and wonder about.  Only Jesus was capable of paying the price for the forgiveness and cleansing that we need.  Perhaps the difference is that “atonement” has the concept of forgiveness by covering while the blood of Jesus offers not only forgiveness but also cleansing, regeneration, adoption, and justification.

So?  The discussions will go on.  The disagreements will endure until we stand in front of the judgement seat.  I am looking forward to the look on the faces of some people I have listened to when they see that eternity has people who were not members of their church.  The key point I would emphasize is that atonement if available and possible.
