An Idea Borrowed

Years ago on a radio program someone shared that they read a chapter in Proverbs every day. Since there are 31 chapters and the longest month has 31 days it allows you to read through Proverbs on a regular basis. I use it as the launch pad for my personal worship time and branch out from there. On this blog I will try to share some of the insights I have in the Word. I will try to organize them in the archive by reference.

One Sword, Two Edges

Proverbs 20:10 (KJV) Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.

The basic point here is a demand for honesty in buying and selling.  I think the Hebrew is literally “a stone and a stone” meaning two sets of weights.  There is also a principle involved that spoke to me today.

We are looking here at one of the principles behind the rule of law.  The rule of law has two basic points.  First, you agree ahead of time what the rules are.  Second, you apply them the same to everyone.  It is a bedrock of our legal system.  Too often it is ignored.

So?  We need to apply the rule of law, or one set of measuring stones, to all areas of our life.  Yes, we are special in the eyes of God but that is not license to cheat.  It is expectation to live to a higher standard.
