An Idea Borrowed

Years ago on a radio program someone shared that they read a chapter in Proverbs every day. Since there are 31 chapters and the longest month has 31 days it allows you to read through Proverbs on a regular basis. I use it as the launch pad for my personal worship time and branch out from there. On this blog I will try to share some of the insights I have in the Word. I will try to organize them in the archive by reference.

 Quietly Destructive

(Pro 27:4 KJV)  Wrath is cruel, and anger is outrageous; but who is able to stand before envy?

“Jealousy” (7068) is something I don’t think much about yet it is something that the Bible considers a major issue.  Why the difference?  It could be that jealousy is kind of a secret sin whereas the other issues in this verse are hard to not notice.  When people are angry you can feel it even if they won’t admit it.  My wife will often tell people, “I’m not angry.”  I will sometimes ask her why she feels a need to say that.

There are different English words and Hebrew words that express this.  The point is that envy, jealousy, covetousness and such is very destructive.

So?  Just another issue to search your heart about.

It is such an important theme in the Bible to be the best you can be where you are in life. You are storing up riches in heaven. I have a really hard time accepting that. I suppose that problem leads me to envy and bitterness.

As I have been memorizing (again) I Corinthians 13 I have been trying to apply it as I go. One thing I did not think I had a problem with was jealousy. The Lord showed me different. I started finding in my 60's that forcing myself to set aside time in the morning for the worship of praise and thanks helped a lot. God does a lot of, "Now listen here, boy..." during that time. When I retired it was easier to take the time but still a discipline.
