An Idea Borrowed

Years ago on a radio program someone shared that they read a chapter in Proverbs every day. Since there are 31 chapters and the longest month has 31 days it allows you to read through Proverbs on a regular basis. I use it as the launch pad for my personal worship time and branch out from there. On this blog I will try to share some of the insights I have in the Word. I will try to organize them in the archive by reference.

Identity Theft

(Proverbs 3:3 KJV)  Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:

This reminds me of how post modern thinking has done an identity theft on the meaning of love.  Because we have allowed Hollywood to sell us on a love grounded in eros instead of agape we have come to believe that love is something you fall into.  In the Bible love is agape.  Agape is a love that you commit to.  Obviously it requires the grace of God and the work of the Holy Spirit but those are freely given.  We are not victims of our emotions.  We are to “let not” (408) the things of God “forsake” (leave NASB) (5800a) us.

Christian character is a choice because God makes it possible for us to choose.  Here we have “mercy” (kindness NASB) (2617a) [chesed] and “truth” (571).  The list goes on other places.

So?  If you have decided to follow Jesus then follow Jesus.  That means staying on the path by the choices we make.  You are not an animal with irresistible instincts.
