An Idea Borrowed

Years ago on a radio program someone shared that they read a chapter in Proverbs every day. Since there are 31 chapters and the longest month has 31 days it allows you to read through Proverbs on a regular basis. I use it as the launch pad for my personal worship time and branch out from there. On this blog I will try to share some of the insights I have in the Word. I will try to organize them in the archive by reference.

It Depends

Psalm 99:8 (KJV) Thou answeredst them, O LORD our God: thou wast a God that forgavest them, though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions.

(Proverbs 18 also read)

Here is another verse that would drive me toward a translation other than the KJV. “Inventions” means evil deeds. Go figure.

What struck me here was to two opposite actions of God. The first thing He does is forgive. Then He takes vengeance. In my book, and in most books, the two do not go together. I think that something is understood here. What is understood is confession and repentance.

God is willing to forgive. He wants to forgive. Being a holy and just God He has expectations of us, which are those two things. If we are not willing to repent then His forgiveness turns to vengeance.

So? Rejoice in His mercy but understand that His forgiveness is conditional.
