An Idea Borrowed

Years ago on a radio program someone shared that they read a chapter in Proverbs every day. Since there are 31 chapters and the longest month has 31 days it allows you to read through Proverbs on a regular basis. I use it as the launch pad for my personal worship time and branch out from there. On this blog I will try to share some of the insights I have in the Word. I will try to organize them in the archive by reference.

Two Daily Choices

(Proverbs 3:3 KJV)  Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:

I can understand how “mercy” (kindness NASB) (2617a) [chesed] can be a choice but how does “truth” (571)?  Truth either is or it isn’t.  Perhaps this is a reminder of the twofold nature of the Christian life.  Being a follower of Jesus effects our inner attitudes.  Kindness is the Hebrew word chesed which is the word translated “loving-kindness”.  To me it is the Hebrew equivalent of the Greek agape.  It is an inner quality at the center of Christian character.

“Truth” (571) is part of the character of God.  It is an external force.  Nothing can change it.  All we can do is acknowledge it and embrace it.

So?  Every day we have choices to make.  Some involve what is at our core and how it effects our behavior.  Some involves the unchanging standards and principles that God has established for the universe.  We can make wise choices.
