An Idea Borrowed

Years ago on a radio program someone shared that they read a chapter in Proverbs every day. Since there are 31 chapters and the longest month has 31 days it allows you to read through Proverbs on a regular basis. I use it as the launch pad for my personal worship time and branch out from there. On this blog I will try to share some of the insights I have in the Word. I will try to organize them in the archive by reference.

Wife Shopping

(Proverbs 12:4 KJV)  A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.

Do men really want a “virtuous” (excellent NASB) (2428) “woman” (wife NASB) (802)?  It sounds good.  It is obviously meant as a good thing.  God would approve.  Unfortunately we tend to be attracted to the flashy instead of the “virtuous.”

We have an instinct about this word.  It’s most common translation in both NASB and KJV is “army.”  The word means “strength, might, efficiency, wealth, army.”  These are wonderful qualities in an executive secretary but in a wife we tend to want what was in the traditional wedding vow, one who will “love and obey.”

I would guess that God knows better.

So?  Most of us aren’t looking for wives, or husbands for that matter.  We are making choices in other areas of life.  Maybe we should be using God’s measures of value and worth, not those of our culture or natural inclinations.

We'd all be better off if we followed His advice.

As my son says when he wants to mock his own desire to buy the latest gadget, "Shinny!"

Resistance and self control is so dull.

Grace and peace.
