An Idea Borrowed

Years ago on a radio program someone shared that they read a chapter in Proverbs every day. Since there are 31 chapters and the longest month has 31 days it allows you to read through Proverbs on a regular basis. I use it as the launch pad for my personal worship time and branch out from there. On this blog I will try to share some of the insights I have in the Word. I will try to organize them in the archive by reference.

The Law As Reward

Psalms 19:11 (KJV) Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

(Proverbs 15 also read)

We tend to look at the laws Moses as being something that restricts.  They are limitation’s.  There are standards that we need to keep in order to not sin.  All of that is probably true.  But somehow, I don’t think that mixing the fabric in your clothing is on the level with serving only one God.

If this verse David gives us a different perspective on the purpose of the law.  God originally gave the law of Moses to Israel in order to teach Israel how to be civilized and have a culture worth having.  It was to teach them how to treat one another so that they were an example to the rest of the world.  With that in mind, I think that this verse points out to us that keeping the law leads to a better life.  Developing a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness makes life easier to live and more rewarding.

So?  You’re not going to earn your way into heaven.  That is never going to happen because we are not capable of doing that.  However, there are benefits to following the law of God.  Don’t read them and weep, read them and obey.  And then you can rejoice in the rewards.
