An Idea Borrowed

Years ago on a radio program someone shared that they read a chapter in Proverbs every day. Since there are 31 chapters and the longest month has 31 days it allows you to read through Proverbs on a regular basis. I use it as the launch pad for my personal worship time and branch out from there. On this blog I will try to share some of the insights I have in the Word. I will try to organize them in the archive by reference.

Service Please

(Pro 12:9 KJV)  He that is despised, and hath a servant, is better than he that honoureth himself, and lacketh bread.

Most Americans will never have a servant, at least the kind talked about here.  For a prosperous nation that is unusual in history.  Most people are familiar with the scenes from Mary Poppins in which there was a crew of servants upstairs and another down stairs.  Of course the banker was not a middle class individual but it would not have been out of the question for a person of lesser means to have help running the house or caring for the children.

Of course we do actually have servants.  We just don’t think of them that way.  When you go to an eating establishment you have servants.  Some are cooks.  Some are servers.  Some wash dishes.  Do you have someone mow your lawn or clean your pool?  You have servants.

So?  The point here is not that servants are a mark of status but that we should be living in humility.
