An Idea Borrowed

Years ago on a radio program someone shared that they read a chapter in Proverbs every day. Since there are 31 chapters and the longest month has 31 days it allows you to read through Proverbs on a regular basis. I use it as the launch pad for my personal worship time and branch out from there. On this blog I will try to share some of the insights I have in the Word. I will try to organize them in the archive by reference.

Marriage Is for Life

(Proverbs 5:18 KJV)  Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.

When I am standing in the line at the grocery store I usually am forced to look at the covers of national sludge magazines.  One of the constant themes is celebrities finding true love and getting married.  Another constant theme is divorce.  It used to be that the only grounds for divorce was adultery.  Now it is anything that ruffles your feathers.  This is not God’s plan.

We are not to look for a better match.  We are not to try to find someone who understands us better.  We are to “rejoice” (8055) in the wife of our “youth” (5271).  No trophy wives (or husbands) allowed here.

This is directed toward men because in that culture men were the ones with the power.  Today this would be directed at both parties.

So?  Simple statement.  Marriage is for life.  Clear expectation.  Find a way to rejoice.  Difficult obedience at times.

Great and to the point post. This celebrity garbage is a non-stop bad example.I heard a line this weekend from the book 'Sacred Marriage' that said 'What is marriage was meant to make us holy, rather than happy?'. What a crazy, but true statement that our culture has no understanding of. I agree, Marriage is for life....

I divorced in my youth. The second one has been 29 years nearly now. I became a Christian shortly after remarriage. Your post is spot on!

Manturity, It is said that great minds run in the same channel. It is not a coincidence that that channel is carved out by the Holy Spirit in His Word.

Georges, One of the glories of grace is the ability to start over. I would say that 29 years is a good run. Do you think it will work?

Grace and peace.
