An Idea Borrowed

Years ago on a radio program someone shared that they read a chapter in Proverbs every day. Since there are 31 chapters and the longest month has 31 days it allows you to read through Proverbs on a regular basis. I use it as the launch pad for my personal worship time and branch out from there. On this blog I will try to share some of the insights I have in the Word. I will try to organize them in the archive by reference.

Equal Opportunity Sin

(Proverbs 6:24 KJV)  To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.

Is it just my imagination?  It seems there are frequent warnings for men about sexual sin but few for women.  It seems like the naive men are being warned about the fallen women.  There are many possible explanations.  The sociologists would talk about the limited opportunities for women and how they needed to turn to prostitution.  The feminist would claim it was because men wrote the book and controlled the culture.

I think it is simpler than that.  Men had more freedom.  Men had more power to exploit.  Men are more in need of correction.  We also know that men mature slower than women.  It is not a good package.

But enough of that.  The real message is not gender based.  The point is to avoid evil.  It doesn’t matter if it is a man listening to his hormones or a woman listening to gossip.  Or switch the roles if you want.  The problem is sin and our tendency to either drift into it or plunge in with vigor.  Avoid it.  Don’t take the first step.  Run the other way.

So?  Today you will be faced with many choices.  As Jesus said, one road leads to life and one to death.  Allow the commands of God to give you the guidance you need to life.
